On December 19, 2018 UN General Assembly adopted the resolution formally endorsing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM). Ms. Elene Agladze, Deputy Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations made a statement in explanation of vote at the GA plenary meeting.
In her statement Ms. Agladze highlighted the importance of the better management of migration to effectively address current challenges. According to Ms. Agladze, the Global Compact is an expression of goodwill of the states to prevent irregular migration through collective actions.
Deputy Permanent Representative of Georgia also underlined the steps that have already been taken by the Government of Georgia to implement the measures envisaged by the GCM’s cooperative framework and its objectives. Ms. Agladze stressed that, the non-legally binding nature of the Compact provides basis for UN member states to pursue migration policy in accordance with the national perspectives and global challenges.
