Participation of the Deputy Permanent Representative of Georgia to the UN, Ms. Elene Agladze in the High Level SDG Action Event on Education

On 28 June 2017 the High Level SDG Action Event on Education was held in United Nations Headquarters in New York. The event that focused on SDG 4 - ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all - was convened by the President of the UN General Assembly as part of his SDG Action Event series aimed at generating momentum around the implementation of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Ms. Elene Agladze, Deputy Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations participated in the panel discussion on the topic of education in vulnerable and humanitarian situations.

In her comments she underlined that inclusive and quality education is a fundamental human right and a key enabler for any kind for development. She noted that education is among the priorities of the four-point reform agenda of the Government of Georgia and touched upon the national efforts to ensure access to inclusive and quality education for all, including those with special educational needs and those from disadvantaged and socially vulnerable groups.

In her comments, the representative of Georgia spoke about the grave situation in the two Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia that remain under Russian military occupation and draw attention of the participants to the violations of right of persons living inside the occupied territories to receive education in their native language. In particular, the instruction in native Georgian language for ethnic-Georgians in the remaining 11 schools since 2015-2016 academic year has been suspended and substituted by Russian language, respectively. Georgian textbooks are forbidden and replaced by Russian textbooks even in Gali, where over 90% of teachers and personnel and 97% of pupils are ethnic Georgians.
