Publication date: 2013-06-14 Statement of the Georgian Foreign Ministry on the United Nations Resolution 'on the Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia'

On the 13th of June 2013 during its 67th Session, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a Resolution 'on the Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, Georgia', reasserting the fundamental rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The Resolution condemns the demographic changes made by force in the occupied regions, emphasizing the right of all internally displaced persons and refugees, regardless of ethnicity, to a safe and dignified return to their places of origin, and focusing upon the need to fully respect and protect their property rights.

Publication date: 2014-10-24 On October 23 2014, H.E. Ambassador Kaha Imnadze, Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations, made a statement at the UNGA First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) Thematic Debate on Conventional Weapons.

 

The Ambassador said that Georgia as a signatory of the Arms Trade Treaty welcomes the entrance into force of this important international legal instrument on the 24th of December 2014 expresses its readiness to facilitate the full implementation in close cooperation with other partner nations. Georgia commends Mexico's decision to host the First Conference of the States Parties of the Arms Trade Treaty in the second half of 2015. The Parliament of Georgia plans to ratify the Arms Trade Treaty in the near future. Georgia will actively participate in the First CSP as well as in the informal preparatory consultations scheduled to be held in Berlin on November 27-28.
