The Georgian representative noted that the humanitarian situation in the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions of Georgia is constantly deteriorating, and the fundamental rights of ethnic Georgians are violated on a daily basis. In both regions, there are cases of ethnic discrimination, violations of the rights to life, liberty, property and health, arbitrary detentions, abductions and restrictions on access to education in the native language. The representative noted the brutal killings of Tamaz Ginturi, Vitali Karbaia, Davit Basharuli, Giga Otkhozoria, Archil Tatunashvili by the occupying forces and the suspicious death of Irakli Kvaratskhelia, and stressed that the perpetrators of these brutal crimes continue to go unpunished.
The representative of Georgia underlined the commitment of the Government of Georgia to a peaceful resolution of the conflict and noted the importance of the Geneva International Discussions (GID) in this process. The representative urged the international community to intensify coordinated diplomatic efforts to ensure Russia's compliance with the EU-mediated Ceasefire Agreement of 2008, which Russia has consistently violated.
Representative highlighted that the annual resolution on the Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, Georgia at the UN General Assembly is receiving growing support. In the spirit of this resolution, the representative called upon the international community to facilitate efforts to grant access to international security and human rights mechanisms in the occupied territories of Georgia.
