On November 5, 2024, Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Georgia to the United Nations, Ekaterine Lortkipanidze delivered a statement within the Third Committee of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, under the Agenda item 69 – “Elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance”.

The Georgian delegate emphasized that identifying crimes motivated by discrimination or intolerance and ensuring vigilant oversight of all such crimes are critical for the effective implementation of anti-discrimination policy. She also underlined that in order to better respond to challenges, joint data on crimes committed on the grounds of intolerance are provided by the relevant agencies of Georgia through a comprehensive system of statistics.

Ekaterine Lortkipanidze stressed, that regrettably, the conflict-affected people in the Russia-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions of Georgia continue to suffer from ever-increasing violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Among other grave infringements, discrimination on ethnic grounds and prohibition of education in native Georgian language, continue to have extremely negative humanitarian impact on the daily lives of people residing therein.
