The Deputy Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations, Mr. David Abesadze Delivered a Statement during the Debate on the UN Security Council Reform at the 36th Plenary Session of the UN General Assembly
On 11th of November 2024, Deputy Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations, David Abesadze delivered a statement during the debate on the UN Security Council reform at the 36th plenary session of the UN General Assembly.
In his statement, Deputy Permanent Representative reiterated Georgia’s position for the need of the UN Security Council reform. He highlighted recently adopted “Pact for the Future,” which clearly reflects the need of the Security Council reform.
Mr. David Abesadze voiced Georgia’s support for the expansion of both - the permanent and non-permanent categories of membership in the UN Security Council, and underlined Georgia’s priority to allocate additional seat to the Eastern European Group for better regional representation and parity. He also voiced support for allocating additional seats for the African group states and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) across all regions.
Regarding the veto use, Deputy Permanent Representative reiterated the need, the reform to imply restriction, in particular when the decision of the UNSC aims to prevent genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes; also in case when a member is involved in the conflict under consideration and, therefore, cannot exercise its rights impartially.
