On November 25, 2024, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations, David Abesadze, delivered a statement at the high-level meeting marking the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

In his statement, Deputy Permanent Representative reiterated that promotion of women’s rights and elimination of domestic violence is a matter of utmost importance and remains a priority for Georgia. In order to contribute to global endeavors and effectively respond to existing challenges, a number of measures are being implemented by Georgia.

He stressed that, to better address violence against women, strict criminal policy has been adopted on such crimes. Legislative amendments, such as the recent introduction of state compensation for the victims of violence as well as the establishment of the National Referral Mechanism in 2024, serve to further strengthen the safety net for survivors of gender-based violence.

He underlined that fight against gender-based violence is given a major emphasis within the National Strategy for the Protection of Human Rights in Georgia.

Deputy Permanent Representative emphasized that interlocking crises, including conflicts and dire humanitarian situations are further exacerbating violence against women and girls having disproportionate impacts on them in vulnerable situations. The grave humanitarian consequences of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine continue to bring immense human suffering, particularly affecting vulnerable civilians, including women and girls.

He expressed deep concern that due to Russia’s illegal occupation of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions of Georgia, Georgia is deprived of the possibility to implement the human rights protection framework in the occupied territories, where women and girls continue to suffer from grave violations of their rights and fundamental freedoms, including but not limited to freedom of movement and illegal detentions by the Russian occupation forces.
