On 15 December, the UN Security Council held a thematic open debate, “Leadership for Peace,” initiated by Slovenia’s Presidency of the Council. 

Ioseb Jorjoliani, Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Georgia to the UN, delivered remarks on behalf of Georgia. Counsellor discussed the challenges facing Georgia, noting that Russia continues to illegally occupy territories of Georgia, Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region, and highlighted that the occupation results in gross human rights violations and prevents international monitoring mechanisms from accessing the occupied territories. Ioseb Jorjoliani also spoke about Georgia’s role in supporting peace and stability in the South Caucasus, including supporting the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In addition, Georgian diplomat noted that for Georgia, peace is not only a policy choice but an existential priority. 

In conclusion, the Counsellor reaffirmed Georgia’s firm commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and multilateral diplomacy.
